Giants Rib Discovery Centre
Niagara Escarpment Bibliography

Introduction

In order to facilitate access to information about the Niagara Escarpment, the Giant’s Rib Discovery Centre has developed this bibliography for posting on its website.  Our hope is that it will encourage people to deepen their understanding of the escarpment, realize what a treasure this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is, and will cherish and protect it.

The material is suitable for people who want to find out more about the Escarpment and for research by secondary school students and university undergraduates.  Much of the material is secondary sources, but also includes primary sources, including books and articles by research specialists and government documents dealing with protection of the Niagara Escarpment and determination of legitimate uses of its resources.

Due to space considerations, the bibliography will be posted one section at a time.  The first is the “Environmental Studies and Protection” section.  Additional sections, including biology and geology will follow in the course of time.  Our ultimate goal is to make a searchable bibliography, in which the user is free to access any part of the bibliography at any time.

Here I must also acknowledge the help of many people in the preparation of the bibliography, including librarians at McMaster University and the authors who provided bibliographies for my research.  Special thanks to our speakers for the Bruce Duncan Memorial Lecture Series who have called materials to my attention.  Of these, I would like to mention by name, Marcus J. Buck for taking the time to provide bibliographies on karst, from which I culled entries for the section just posted and the Geology Section, and Adrienne Brewster whose suggestions on insects and butterflies will appear in the Biology Section.Thank you also to Brenda VanRyswyk for her assistance with Dragonfly and Damselfly Material for addition to Biology section of GRDC Website Bibliography.   Finally Michael Brand, who previously had been in charge of this website, was  tireless in resolving technical problems in the assembly of the bibliography and getting it posted on the website, and he also provided a substantial number of entries for the bibliography.

Finally, I hope our users will feel free to call new material or material that has been neglected to my attention, as well as recommend improvements to this bibliography.
