August 2015 Faucet Falls

August 2015 Faucet Falls

Giant’s Rib Escarpment Education Network’s Waterfall of the Month for August 2015 is Faucet Falls.

Faucet Falls is located about half way between DeCew Falls and Lower Decew Falls on the ravine wall of Beaverdams Creek in St. Catharines and has been referred to as Tunnel Falls in the past. Its GPS Location is: N 43° 6.617′ W 79° 15.816′.

As can be seen in the attached photo, the water flow originates from numerous pipes (tunnels) above the falls which carry surplus waters from the DeCew Generating Station nearby, thus making Faucet Falls a manmade waterfall. Although manmade, people who come to visit DeCew Falls often are intrigued by Faucet Falls.

To visit Faucet Falls, take Hwy 406 exit off the QEW, then exit at St. David’s Rd. and go right. In a short distance turn left onto Merrittville Highway, then right onto DeCew Rd. Follow this for 1.8 km to the Morningstar Mills parking lot on the right side. The waterfall can be viewed through the trees (if the leaves are off the trees) from the trail just past the building at DeCew Falls. The best viewing location is from the ravine bottom, however it is extremely difficult venturing into the ravine, thus just enjoy the attached photo of Faucet Falls.
