July 2015 Cave Falls

July 2015 Cave Falls

Giant’s Rib Escarpment Education Network’s Waterfall of the Month for July 2015 is Cave Falls.

Cave Falls is located on the south side of the ravine that leads to Buttermilk Falls from the junction of the Red Hill Creek (from Albion Falls), in the east end of Hamilton. It is considered a Ribbon Cascade type waterfall with a width of 10 feet (3m) and a height of 50 feet (17m). The interesting feature of Cave Falls is that it originates from a cave opening part way down the ravine slope and not the surface. It often is dry, normally having flow after a heavy rainfall or during the winter snow melt. Its coordinates are 43° 12′ 16.06″ N  79° 49′ 8.46″ W.

It is extremely difficult to reach Cave Falls from the south side of the ravine where the actual waterfall is located (and where the attached photo was taken) as there is no pathway down the steep ravine. It is best to view Cave Falls from the north side of the ravine leading to Buttermilk Falls when the leaves are off the trees, or better yet, just enjoy the attached photo of Cave Falls.
